According to the World Gold Council, the yellow metal’s reserves posted an average of approximately over 191.40 tons from 2000 to 2015. It attained an all-time peak of 274.42 tons during the first quarter of 2003. On the other hand, there was a record-low of 126.89 tons from July to September of 2007.

Just like other countries, Philippine gold jewelers are also strict when it comes to testing these valuable gemstones. What do appraisers recommend when it comes to examining the authenticity of these gems? There are simple methods of determining if an alleged gold bracelet, ring or necklace is real. Try to scrape the metal against glass. In case the metal is grazed, one possibility is gold content is minimal. The worse-case scenario is this is not real gold.

Place a magnet next to the jewelry. The item is not pure if the magnet is attracted to it. Keep in mind that gold is highly pliable and non-magnetic. You can also rub unglazed porcelain against it. This material is not gold if it leaves a black line. In the event it leaves a golden yellow strip, the metal is considered gold. Use the magnifying glass to examine the article closely. Nearly all commercially produced jewelry is marked with gold purity. These are from 10 to 24 karats. If you are in doubt, bring your jewels to an authorized appraiser to find out if tests have to be made.
